INSTRUCTION

Private Lessons

Oakland Studio

Chuck offers weekly, biweekly, and short-term private bass instruction tailored to your interests and designed to get you playing better with others, whether it's in a jam or on the stage. Handouts and recordings are provided, and students are encouraged to bring in pieces that they're working on. Among possible areas of study:

 

  • Bass theory, from bluegrass to jazz, made easy

  • Bowing (French or German)

  • Improvisation

  • Instruments: upright, electric, guitar bass, and ukulele bass

  • Reading

  • Repertoire

  • Singing while playing bass

  • Soloing

  • Styles: blues, bluegrass, country, folk, jazz, Latin jazz, pop, swing, Western swing

  • Technique, from bluegrass to jazz

  • Timing and groove

  • Walking bass for jazz, swing, honky-tonk, blues, etc.


Chuck studied jazz bass with Glenn Richman, bassist for famed vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, is active in numerous Bay Area bands, and is an in-demand bassist in the area's rich jazz scene.

Classes

Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, Berkeley

Chuck served for several years as the bass instructor at the venerable Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley, offering 6-week classes for beginners and intermediate players of the upright bass, acoustic and electric bass guitars, and ukulele-style basses.

 

Styles included bluegrass, country, folk, blues, swing, and jazz.  Courses  included: Easy Bass, Bluegrass Bass, Blues Bass, Bass Theory, Introduction to Walking Bass, Bowing the Bass, Swing Bass, Taking Your First Solo, Bass Grooves & Styles.
